Coolant recovery tank on C30 MKII?

I recently purchased a 1991 C30 MKII that has been in regular use by the previous owner up until a month ago. It is powered by its original Universal diesel engine with about 2000 hours. Everything is basically operational, however, I have discovered that that the coolant overflow hose, the one next to the cap where coolant is added, has been routed directly to the bilge. This does not seem correct. I would would have expected any ethyl glycol coolant overflow should be routed to some kind of expansion/recovery tank. Should there be such a tank on the C30, and if so, where would it normally be located?

Regards,
George R.

Not standard

No coolant recovery tank was provided on early Catalinas; I don't know when, if ever, they started putting them in. My 1984 C36 had none. I bought an aftermarket automotive coolant recovery tank and installed it myself.

Re: Not standard

Thanks. I will do the same and install an aftermarket recovery tank. Sending it straight to the bilge just doesn't sit right with me.

Buy a small rubbermaid plastic bottle with a screw on cap and hole. The hole is the perfect size for the hose from the coolant manifold. That's what I did.

George,

I recently helped a friend bring back a 1989 Newport 30 (about a 125 mile trip). The boat was equipped with a 25XP universal. The older model had the compression release option.

3 hours in, about 10 miles offshore, the boat filled with steam. We used the headsail for steerage to identify the cause. What we discovered was coolant was steaming out from pinhole leaks in the vertical tube to the pressure cap on the exhaust head.

I had never seen this before and upon further checking, saw no overflow bottle, just a hose to the bilge. I believe there was the possibility of steam & pressure over time etching the copper tube and eventually causing these pinholes.

I've have been designing piping systems for years and know steam/pressure can cause etching in certain materials, such as copper.

Without a sealed-in system (an overflow bottle will seal out air), I believe the problem was two-fold.

1. An overflow hose to the bilge will cause a loss of cooling fluid after each engine use and allow for air in your exhaust head and thermostat housing.

2. I believe the absence of a bottle caused the eventual failure of the pressure cap copper tube @ the exhaust head. No telling how many times the orig. owner overheated his engine, and checked his fluids. Remember the dumbest guy you will ever meet is the guy you bought your boat from.

We did get the boat back but my pal was not a happy camper. He ordered a replacement head ($1800.00), and we changed out the old one. We also added an overflow bottle. We started the engine, put it in gear and ran at 3/4 cruising speed for 5 minutes.

The overflow bottle had coolant under pressure filling it and it was boiling. What we found was the original owner had removed the thermostat, there was none. I have heard of folks in warmer climates doing this but it will change the operating temperature parameters of the engine performance.

My take is that there may have been a correlation between not having an overflow sealant system, and because the engine was running hotter, the orig. owner listened to a dummy and removed the thermostat. I also think over time this combination caused his press. cap tube to fail.

Why do all cars have overflow bottles, & thermostats, think about it.
We also cleaned the heat exchanger and are going to sea trial the engine today.

These are just some thoughts I have for saying to be smart, hook a bottle up and run at the correct operating parameters.

Thanks CR. Very interesting.

I have just ordered a complete coolant recovery tank kit from marinepartsource.com. It is made by Westerbeke and recommended for Universal and Westerbeke engines. I don't plan on running the engine again until it is installed and the thermostat checked. I should have it in a few days, and in the mean time I have a new head to install.

I have a 95 mkIII, the tank is under the galley sink. However, the hose rotted away and I never replaced it. When my impeller went out and we began overheating, I set the sails and sailed into the slip. It never boiled over so I never replaced it.

I bought an automotive tank from the local scrapyard, fabbed up a mount and will be installing it tomorrow.
My Catalina is a 1988 Mk 2, and it too had the overflow direct to the bilge
George, are you in Horseshoe Bay? looks like it from your avatar pic.

I have installed the overflow tank, I was lucky I bought a tank that was only about 2 inches thick, as there is not much more room than that, I fabbed up a mount from an old plastic drywall knife, and attached the tank just starboard of the aft engine access door under the sink, I kept the tank as high as possible, and routed the hose away from the hot exhaust. I should have taken pics, maybe later.

Pic of coolant recovery tank

Here's a pic of the finished install, now I wish I had noticed what vehicle the tank was from, the car was really smashed up, and there was not much of it left in the scrapyard
