Las year I had the diesel (6.5 GM) engine replaced on one of my trucks replaced under warrenty. The block had corroded from electrolosis. I was told that this was probably due to the fact That I had been using regular atomotive coolant. I was told I should have been using DexCool (dextron) coolant. As I write this I am in the process of buying a boat (Hunter 37.5) with a diesel engine (not my first boat but my first diesel in a boat). Do I need to take any special precautions regarding coolant in this engine (yanmar). Thanks Chris

yanmar coolants

earlier this year, the Yanmar service tech down here told me of a service bulletin that specified that the green coolant containing silica should be replaced with the pink stuff. Apparently it has to do with silica deposits forming in passages and blocking them.

Yanmar Service Advisory on Coolant and Additives

It is Yanmar's recommendation that coolant solution is changed every 500 hours. (On Yanmar model 6LP 250 hours) The following coolants/anti-freeze products have been tested and approved by Yanmar: Texaco Long Life Coolant Anti-Freeze both regular and pre-mixed. This is product code 7997 and 7998 and is available in gallons contains. It is recommended by Yanmar that the cooling system be drained and flushed before filling. It is also recommeded that only Texaco Long Life Coolant be used to top-off. For more information on this product you may contact Texaco at 800-782-7852. Havoline Extended Life Anti Freeze and Coolant. Product code 7994. This product is available through Texaco gas stations. Procedures are the same for this product as with Texaco Long Life Coolant Anti-Freeze. Dex-Cool Long Life Coolant is available through GM service centers worldwide and is another recommended choice. Also, Prestone Extended Life Coolant, product code AF888 is satisfactory. Some of the advantages of this type of coolant include: Improved water pump life due to reduced water pump seal wear resulting from fewer abrasive dissolved solids. Reduces hard water scale Better heat transfer than conventional coolants No silicate gel formation during use Long term corrosion protection for aluminum, brass, cast iron, steel, solder and copper alloys. Same for Volvo

Would you suggest following the same recommendation for the Volvo Penta?
