hunter enclosed the 3ym20 in my 2008 hunter 31 so well that I can't see the draincock in the coolant hose. How does it open? do you need a tool?

I have a 3ym20 in my 2007 Catalina 309. The drains in the hoses use an allen wrench. Couldn't tell you what size offhand. There's also a petcock on the starboard side of the block, not too far away from the oil filter.

Bummer about the limited access to the engine. What're they thinkin'?

I just looked up a picture of the engine setup in your 31. I see you have access from the front, and not much else, which is fairly typical.

On my Catalina, there's access from the front and the port side. Which means you don't have good access to some fairly important stuff on the stbd side of the engine, like the oil filter. Sure you can reach in and replace it, but how to you really deal with the oil that leaks down the side of the block. And you can forget about getting at the drain petcock on the port side. Dumb.

I had the option on my Catalina of removing the wall and door for the aft cabin, giving me 360 degree access to the Yanmar. That's livin'!

If your boat was my boat, and I seriously considered buying a Hunter 31, I'd want to improve the engine access. I'm wondering if it would be possible for you to add an access port on each side of the engine. Use a screw in deck plate...bigger the better...8 to 10 inches, or even 12 inches. Back up the plate with sound deadener.

My previous boat had full standing headroom with 360 degree access to the engine...of course, it was an outboard.

Thanks for the reply. I did try an allen wrench, I'll try some different sizes. I have access from the back, starboard and front. All are high. I can barely get a small socket on the impeller plate.
