I had a job today locating some water pipes that would freeze in very cold weather and correcting the cause. We narrowed the problem area down with long stem cooking thermometers and small holes in the floor. Then I cut a hole in the ceiling below and stuck my camera up in the joist bay to make sure.

Correcting the cause

Ross, how do you correct the cause of "pipes that freeze in cold weather?

And can it be packaged and sent to my house?

Digital cameras are great for taking "blind" photos. I do it all the time on my boat to see areas where you head just will not fit.

My wife takes "blind" photos when she wants to get a great picture. She will simply hold the camera up and aim it generally at her subject without looking through the viewfinder. She actually takes better photos this way.

I heard on the news yesterday that Eastman/Kodak is down to about 20,000 employees from over 100,000 just a few years ago. They referenced the economy as the cause but I would think the lack of demand for consumer film must be a big factor.

Short term, let the faucet drip if you can. Long term, better insulation or pipe heaters.

Bill, In this case the insulation in the end of the joist bay was exposed in the space above the porch ceiling and had been pulled out by the siding contractors during some work 3-4 years ago. There is/was no band joist and I could reach out through the wall into the cold space above the porch. I just put the insulation back where it belonged and covered the hole in the ceiling with a cold air return grill. The temperature in the joist bay went from 38 degrees when I got there to 75 when I left. It the picture you can see the spike of the thermometer just to the right of the pipes.

Yeah aside from just documentation for future use.. I built a house 5 years back and took pictures of all the plumbing routed under/in the slab. Took pictures of the wire runs too.. Before the house was finished, the electrician had forgotten where the wires were behind the dry wall.. Pictures saved the day.. Have all the slab detail and framing too.. all on a CD .. Good Stuff..

The OP posing as Ross is an impostor. If this were the real Ross, we would be reading a description of an array of mirrors, lighted by kerosene lanterns and documented with a printers proof from a copper etching which he would have pulled between stirrings of a home preserve.

What? This can't be?:confused: Ross with a digital camera?:eek: When did they start selling for less than a can of Spam??;) Must have been a gift....;)

I have a friend who works for Goodwill and I spent several hours helping him set up a salt water aquarium. He wanted to pay for my time and I told him that I would be pleased if he found a working digital camera in amoungst the stuff they get in for recycling. The next time I saw him he gave me a new in the box Fuji 850 camera and confessed that he had purchased it. I thanked him and we continue to work together. When Nancy saw it she said, "well so much for that idea for a christmas present."
I will post a picture now and then. ;)

Last year we chartered a boat in the BVI's between Christmas & New Years. While sailing near Sandy Kay we saw a huge mega yacht approach and proceed to pass us about a mile away. We had the binoculars out and were trying to see the name of the yacht on its transom but the motion of the waves made it imposible to see. My son grabbed his digital camera and took a shot. He then checked out the picture in the screen and zoomed in on the name. Worked like a charm.
The boat was "Kismet".

As an electrician I come across boxes buried in the wall or ceiling and while looking for a short one day I knew something was buried and was ready to head for the inspection mirror in my truck when I realized that my cell phone/camera would fit right in the 4" box opening and I found the problem about three feet down the ceiling bay buried under sheetrock

Milwalkee is making a fiberoptic camera now, needs a 3/4 inch hole, sells for 250, be worth it in the right circumstance.

HEY!!!! I don't see any sails.... "Stink Pots" are not allowed here (grin).....

Looks nice though, Can you afford the $$$ to just get ot of the harbor though? I sure can't...
