Hi all, Dawn and I arrived at Ventura Marina Sunday morning around 10:00 am, after about 30 minute prep on our H-170 we launched her and set sail. The temperature was a cool 65 degrees, much better than our 103 - 105 degrees for the past week. the winds were 10 and gusting to about 15 while in the small marina. Lots of other small day sailors were out and about as well as the big boys who were heading out to the open seas. we made our way out to the open waters too, with the 170 reefed we were moving quite well through the chopy conditions heading south along the white sandy beaches of Ventura. Stronger gusts and white caps are building with chop about 1 foot and swells of about 2 feet every few seconds or so. After holding this course for 20 minutes or so we decided to tack north and were running on a close hull. the H-170 was pounding through the chop at a good clip with an occasionl spray comming across the bow. As we approached the Marina we noticed several small sail boats were heading back in to calmer waters of the marina, we thought it best too. We were sailing with the swells some what down wind, the entrance was busy with the big guys heading out and the small guys running back in. The water is just a ripple now as we were gliding along nicely. after a short sail in the marina we tide up at the dock to have lunch and pull the boat out of the water. Still 65 degress when we left Ventura to head home arriving to a hot 102 degress at 4:30 pm......... I know must of you are in a heat wave too, hope your able sail in a cool breeze.

Nice sailing story, Glenn

Sounds fantastic!! You've got the best of both worlds, being able to choose the protected waters or the open sea... I've been out for a few good sails on the lake, with 1 or 2 friends, which aside from the cameraderie, really do make the boat sail better in a strongish breeze or when the gusts hit. Yesterday went out for a short sail by myself, but wound up coming back in after only 20 minutes, as the winds were the shiftiest I've ever seen them. 360 degree shifts, at 15 kts, with only me as ballast - does NOT equal fun! Glenn - cheers to Dawn and Bryan!!

More ballast !

Tereza, Yes, its always nice to have more balast in the way of a crew, some one who enjoys what your experiencing. The boats seem to handle better too setting a little deeper in the water. Are you able to sail late afternoons towards sunset ? I know you don't have lights. can one be on the lake after dark ? I should have mounted LED lights on my boat so I could sail back in at dusk, or possibly a night sail in the marina. Brian, Steve and I are to sail in the Wednesday evening race out of Ventura on Brian's 23 footer, I will pass your cheers on to him and Dawn.

No lights here

I was thinking of mounting battery-oerated lights so that I could go out at dusk, though I am not quite sure of how safe that would be on our lake. That is on my (small) list of things to add to the boat. Hope the race was fun!

No Race !

When I met Steve and Brian, I could see the open waters of the ocean churing in white foam and heavy chop, I declined the ride but they went out, no jib, reefed and had a ball ! They did not race and were only out for a short time. Next time......... Glenn
