cookers & heaters, experiences ?

Hello everybody,

Heathers:
I'm thinking of purchasing a Sigmarine 100 dieselheater when I'm over to the
States in January for a salesmeeting.
Does anybody has experience with these heaters in an Albin Vega?
How strict is the 3 ft exhaust pipe on top? I can imagine there's not
enough room when mounting this thing on the forward bulkhead (with a little
dieseltank on the other side in the toilet room)

Cookers:
I've got an Origo 3000 on order (for more than 6 weeks now, sigh) so I'm
starting to think of alternatives; what other brands should I look for?? (I
hate to install butane or propane gas!) (thing is, that the gimbals I have
now are still OK for the newer series Origo...) What brand/make cookers are
you guys cookin' on? experiences you want to share here?
Thanks in advance & best regards,

Hielke van Oostrum

Hielke,
We used to own a Hallberg Rasey 35. The diesel heater kept the cabin
warm and looked good (not a Sigmarine). When you turned it off though it
would take a while for the fuel in the system to finish burning. One rather
windy day we were side tied to another boat and had went onboard to watch a
video. Somobody smelled something burning and when we went to look we found
flames coming out of our companion way. There was no way to fight the fire
and we had to cut her loose and watch her burn.
Lyric has a Force 10 2 burner propane stove with broiler that we really
like. She also has a solenoid cutoff and propane sensor. One other thing we
did was mount a washdown pump in the lazarette. We like the stove as it fits
in the available space. In order to gimble it though we had to raise it up
on some plywood risers. I know that Plastimo makes a 2 burner with oven that
would also fit and if I could have found one it would have been my first
choice.
Good luck with your project. Walt, Lyric 120

Hi Hielke

I think the Origo is a great cooker. They are now made under the name
Electolux but still exactly the same cooker. Available in the UK quite
easily.

I know nothing about diesel heaters on boats. Sorry

Kind Regards

Hi Heilke, Have been using a propane stove, and a propane catalytic heater
and propane refrigerator. The advantages. Clean, easy to light, very hot
flame, available, cheap operation and regarding the heater it burns at about
99% efficiency, which means no exhaust pipe or stack. Disadvantages must have
all safety controls and monitors in place. Needs oxygen supply while in use
especially the heater, and the gas is explosive. Since my cooking and heating
supply is propane, I also use a propane refrigerator (camping refrigerator 3
way, 12 VT 120 VT and gas) mounted in gimbals. The 20 LB propane tank is
mounted in the lazarette in a seperate container on the stern for safety and
will last for about 3 to 4 weeks depending on usage each day. You may also
want to consider using a portable Coleman catalytic heater or a Origo pail
heater, which produce around 6,000 BTU sufficient to heat the Vega. Regards

Hello: My wife and I replaced the original origo stove with an origo 2000
last year. It fits into the space without any modifications required. Works
great. For heat I have a wood stove designed by a Vancouver firm. It fits on
the bulkhead port side and is vented through the coach roof. Works great
with little effort. I burn scrap wood or presto logs a manufactured round
wood product that can be cut with a hammer and screwdriver into small pucks.
As with all great things VEGAthis is also efficient and inexpensive.

Cheers
