Converting to a kick-up rudder O'Day 20

I have a good condition solid(30" below waterline) rudder for my O'Day 20 but want to convert it a kick-up style to avoid damage and allowing me to go in much shallower water. The keel depth is only 14" and my mooring is about 3' at low tide on a good day.
Does anybody have a picture of an existing conversion or a kick-up rudder that I could use as a model. I have owned this type of rudder before and they have more advantages than meet the eye.

Have you tried to get one through Rudy at D & R ?
I have the 222 O and the kick up rudder is standard. I can gather pix and send if this will help.. I know they are a little pricey. Maybe Rudy can tell you if the demensions are the same. ???

I have some pics of a kick-up rudder that was made by a friend of mine named Keith Hayden, that I can show you. What I would do is build a new rudder head out of either Aluminum or stainless steel, and build a blade out of plywood and fiberglass. Your finished rudder blade should have the same shape and angle when it's completely down, as your present blade. If it doesn't, you'll get a lot of weather helm. keeping your other rudder in tack will give you something to go by. It's easy to duplicate the rudder head, but the upper part of the blade needs to have a built in stop which will allow the rudder to keep the right angle when it's completely down. You rudder blade may have been built by the same company that built my old rudder blade. If this is the case, converting it over may be next to impossible, plus you risk the chance of breaking it. They break easy.

Attached are some photos of a folding rudder I built for my O'Day 23. This rudder is not a duplicate of the original but rather its 18 inches longer. The boat has less apparent weather helm and it holds course at much higer angles of heel. The materials were not cheap $350 -$400 with a lot of skilled labor. You may be better off buying one of the available aftermarket rudders such as from "D&R" but I do love mine.
