I purchased a 1993 35.5 last fall. The boat has rarely been used. (only 280 engine hours) Because it has only been used for day sailing it is still equiped with it's original Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stove and oven. We are heavy cruisers and need to put that galley into action. We are wondering if anyone has a 35.5 that was originally outfitted with CNG and is now propane. We would like to hear about how your vessel is outfitted. (i.e. tank locker location, fuel line chases, etc.) Thanks for any information you can provide. Rob Edgcombe Grand Blanc, MI

Is there not any CNG available near you? I use it, and have reasonable access to purchasing it, and we find it very nice to use. We are heavy summer cruisers and don't even think of converting unless it becomes tougher to get in our area.

My '93 37.5 was converted
by the PO. Double propane locker (have to check on brand) in the port cockpit locker, vented out to the hull. It's a tight fit, so not sure how it would work on a 35.5 (very similar boat.) Fuel line runs up the port side to the stove. I think you just change the orifices on the stove and it's propane ready. There's been a lot of discussion here (see archives re process) but probably a call to manuf for the parts. I sail the bay/SE coast and don't cook all that much. I'd like to go back to CNG for ease of use/safety issues, although I've had no problems with the propane (knock wood.)

Seaward sent a complete kit for our 20 y.o. Hillerange stove (jets, valves, fittings.) Took me about an hour. No problems. Installed Trident's control sensor package. Built my own air tight box in floor of lazarette which vents out transom. THAT took quite a while. It houses 2 eleven pound aluminum tanks. It all works flawlessly. If you still have a local supplier and cruise in the area I'd stay with the CNG. It's great for all the reasons already cited. Our retail suppliers here in the Tampa Bay area have been slowly drying up so it was time for us to switch. However, if you'll be cruising in areas of unknown supply...well, it's a no brainer. You can get LPG anywhere in the world. With a properly installed system and used with common sense propane is safe.

I was told that I cannot convert our Hillerange stove from CNG to LPG because it uses aluminum tubing to the burners. Have you heard of that? It does not make sense to me but how else will they sell me a new stove? Do you have a link for the company selling a conversion kit?

who made the Hillerange. They built it. They know what they're talking about. Hell, one of the pieces in my conversion kit was an ALUMINUM tube. I seriously doubt you need a new stove. You can reach them at (562)699-7997. I got that from their website when I googled them. They'e very helpful and knowledgeable on the phone even when I'm calling them about a 20 year old stove. They'll ask you for model, serial and product numbers which should be on a placard inside the top cover. My kit cost about $120 and was a perfect match. As an aside, these guys helped me trouble shoot a pesky thermocouple problem a few years ago when they knew I might not be spending money with them. They helped me fix my stove over the phone(!) and I didn't spend a dime. They were very knowledgeable and helpful. I'll be staying with Seaward products in the future just for their service alone.

Does anyone know a source to purchase a spare CNG tank. Two years ago prior to going down the ICW our supplier quoted me $400 and I passed. Sometimes it was hard to find a dealer along the way. I knew when the dockmaster said tell me what CNG is and I'll tell you if we have it I was in trouble Johnnie Cake

My 35.5 Legend is converted to propane we put the tank in the aft most port lazarette the lines then run through the hull under the aft cabin to the galley.
