I want to check into the potential for converting our propane sytem to CNG. Anyone tackled this task? What's involved? Pro's and con's on propane vs CNG?Michael O'O'Day 34 "Frigate"
Why would you want to do that? Most people switch just the other way.CNG is getting more expensive, and also much harder to find.Conversions are done by Seaward, the stove manufacturers and many people have done it on their own. It involves an adjustment to the burner, and also need to do the stove burner, too.Try the link and use the search engines to see if you can find some of those stories.
I believe there may be some issues with the CNG and Propane reacting differently with different types of tubing in the supply lines - something to check out. CNG apparently holds fewer BTU's per pound, as well, so the tank needs to be bigger to get you as far through the season. If you can find a supply, and aren't worried about running out en route somewhere, It's supposed to be safer because it doesn't sink into the bilge the way propane can.
I have had propane on my boats for the last 22 yrs without incident. Virtually all charter boats use propane. CNG has less heat output, is substantially more expensive, and is quite difficult to locate. With today's safety devices, a careful installation, and reasonable caution, propane is safe.
Before you convert to propane, check out the article on the related link (scroll about 3/4 down page), below, first. While the article addresses solutions for Chesapeake Bay, they may be applicable to SoCal with a little research
Didn't see the link, Jay.....??? My biggest reason for considering converting from propane to CNG is safety only. Steve (I think) made the point well that propane is safe enough if all the precautions are followed. Worth considering - especially from this former Atomic 4 owner who wasn't concerned about gasoline when all safety precautions were followed!Michael O'
