I would like to change my Speed and Clutch controls from the starboard side lower cockpit onto the Edson pedestal. Has anyone ever done this? I have a 1978 30 ft. I checked my pedestal and have a middle unit with the holes for the controls but they are plugged up, so I think this is the correct unit. I'll need to purchase the handles and extension bars that they connect to. I checked the lenghts of cables and their at least 96" each, so, I think I'll need a few parts and think I can do it. If anyone has attempted this please let me know what to look out for. Also, I looked in the Edson catalog (World Edition K-29 page 36) and they have a unit with speed, clutch & connections in case my unit won't work. Thanks Bob Szymanski

Pedestal Controls

Just finished replacing my old Yacht Specialty pedestal with an Edson and thereby graduated from the school of hard knocks. The direction of motion for the shift control was opposite to the old unit. Also, the Edson Control bumps up against the Guard (In forward position), thereby limiting the maximum travel to below the three inches they promised. My Westerbeke gearshift needs nearly four inches of travel. As a result we had to bend the control lever outward (which does not look too good, but it worked. To compensate for the direction, we had to remove the lever at the transmission side and mount it upside down. In all, it was not a simple operation, but it works. Good Luck!

Edson Pedestal

I have the same boat and the Edson pedestal. I had the Yanmar YSM-12 and I re-powered last year with a Bukh 24-hp diesel. I had to replace the control cables -- about $150 for the pair -- but the hook-up was pretty straight forward. I don't see where you will have any problems. You probably have the Yanmar. Let me know if I can help. bhowie@txucom.net
