Hello Everyone, We are considering moving our Cat 30 to Hilton Head, SC or Savanha, Ga. We presently have the boat in Charleston, SC. Does anyone have any suggestions on a good marina with complete facilities?? We are looking for somewhere with showers, store, pumpout, etc....without a huge monthly docking fee. We presently pay around $330 per month and are hoping to reduce if possible. Any other recommended areas around these two locations? Thanks for your input. Paul

Tybee?

I don't know any specific marinas, but I would suggest looking on / near Tybee Island. It's about 20 minutes from Savannah, so convenient to everything, and with a feel closer to the keys than the manic expense of Hilton Head. Good luck!

Savanah

Sail Harbor and Bull River Marina are both about $8.50/ft. Lester

Several thoughts & choices...

Paul, the guides are on the boat but here are several thoughts that come to mind... Savannah: You can't really place the boat near the city and so must be content with putting it down the river a ways. The winding channels, heavy ship traffic in the river and distance to the ocean don't IMO make this a good location for a sailboat, altho' there are lots of side trips to enjoy while motoring. Just south of Palmer Johnson, to port as you are going south on the ICW, is a nice marina that gets good reviews from cruising & local folks - I'm sure the Waterway Guide will ID it for you. Hilton Head is of course the home of many a mega-millionaire and much of the boating scene is priced accordingly. We aren't experts on the area but noticed a number of alternatives along Broad Creek, which is a pretty, winding estuary that eventually delivers one to Shelter Cove Marina, a very protected, floating docks development that's convenient to both a shopping mall and strip mall with excellent grocery - but where all that development is not apparent from the water. And you just have to like all those bike paths that allow you to get almost anywhere! One fellow we know is avoiding the costs of dockage by using one of the moorings by the bridge, about half way up Broad Creek - that's a whole different experience, but perhaps a necessary one unless you have the funds for more conventional dockage there. Were I you, I'd be sure to check Zydler's new guide book on the area. Good luck! Jack

further south?

Saint Simons is. has a nice marina located about a mile from icw and atlantic. There are two docks you can choose from. Where I keep my Hunter 23 it costs less than 100.00 but it has limited access at low tide.Deep water will run you around 200.00 per month i think. Email me if you want.fholmes@ darientel.net
