O'day 28

I bought an 85 O'day 28 about a month ago and have been very happy with it so far. It has lots of room below and good ventilation. It's very stable to sail (my wife doesn't like a lot of heeling) but is harder to single-hand than my Catalina 22 was.

Have had 84 28 for 2 years. Love it. Have blisters on bottom, but just in gelcoat. No major problems. Have autohelm, which makes single handed sailing easy. Love easy engine access.

The O28 is great!

Stephen, I have a '79 O28, and the more I sail her, the better I like her. I was intimidated by the jump from 22' to 28', but the fact that my SO liked her had a lot to do with it. I have had the usual problems one finds on a boat where the owner has lost interest, the worst being a spongy starboard deck under the jenny track. A friend of mine and I braced it with 1/4"X8" aluminum plate and rebedded the track. During the off-season, I will see about doing it the right way. I digress. The boat came wih a tiller autopilot which has made single-handing possible. The sails are original, but there are budget considerations. First priority is properly preparing the bottom and the deck repair. This is a nicely sailing boat, has the 4'6" keel, tracks well, points well, but everyting is in need of inspection, repair or replacment. I did not pay a lot for this boat, which allows me a little leeway in repairs. She is very commodious and the vee berths ARE comfortable for two. You probably won't be dealing with the saildrive that I have but I would reccommend some sort of basic engine course, if you don't already have the experience. If the survey shows there isn't much wrong, go for it! Contact me off-list if there's anything else I can help with. Bill, O22 Closure, O28 Aroundtuit

Stephen, check the owners' reviews!!

There are three reviews of the ODay 28 on the site. Look for Boat Reviews or Review Your Boat on the home page. There are 44 owners to contact listed there too. I own an ODay 272 and my dockmate for a few years owned a 28. I envied him the interior size, displacement, and stability of the 28. If I were to move up in size, I would look first at the O Day 28. 1980 O'day 28

I bought my boat 2 years ago. It was in need of TLC. During the clean up I never stoped sailing her. It's a great boat for the family. I put roller fureling on so I could single hand her.Adding an autohelm to hold the tiller helped too. I sent the sails to a compqny in Ohio to clean, repair and relogo the main, with a bit of polish she looks like new. The Universal engine and transmission were rebuilt last month because I lost forward gear going out the Chula Vista Channel. This was expensive. The boat is easy to sail and very forgiving.
