I am seeking advice and opinions on a Bandit 17 MFG as a beginner sailers first boat to learn and get their hands salty.

Small boats are generally the best for acquiring and honing sailing skills. They will not be the easiest to learn on but the better. A small boat usually responds quicker to changes in wind speed and direction and to the corresponding control inputs. They will require your attention most of the time. Larger boats will provide a more stable platform, be less responsive and more forgiving. A small boat will challenge you and make you a better sailor.
