I am in the market for a 1985-1990 Catalina 30, wing keel. Any good advise on what to look out for. I am also looking for a reliable marine surveyor if and when I find the right boat. Also, anybody know of any nice Catalina 30's available in the NYC, Southern CT or New Jersey area. I have been working with some brokers, however I think I could do better on my own. The problem; I cannot find any boats listed anywhere. I have been checking Yacht World, as well as this site for months.

28 C-30's in the tri-state area

Warren, I did a quick search on Yacht World and I found 28 C-30's in your tri-state area (I also included Rhode Island). My search is listed below. There should be several nice boats for you to check out. Good luck!! Allen Schweitzer s/v Drambuie C-30 Hull# 632

Catalina 30

Warren Spicers Marine is selling my 1985 Catalina TR. We have moved up to a larger boat. The boat Summer Daze is in very good condition. You might want to check it out. Marc

Things to consider

Look at boattraderonline.com. They have many boats listed. Also, I would look at the following on any boat in the 85 to 90 vintage..... Consider 88 and above. Many shortcomings were fixed in the later years. Look for deck compression around the mast step. This seems to happen to all older boats at one time or another (search sailnet.com or this site for mast compression for more details). If the boat has been in salt water ask when the standing rigging was last replaced - this should have been replaced a few times over the life of the boat (if in salt water). Also check the engine cooling lines for clogging from salt water. Check the rudder for play - there should be no give in the rudder. Also check the cutlas bearing (in the strut that supports the prop shaft) - there should be no play in that either. Ask if the water pump and/or fresh water impeller has been replaced. Check both if not. If a hood furling system for the genoa, check the plastic bushing in the top tube of the furling system. In a boat of that vintage this can break and cause damage to the head stay and furling system. If it hasn't been replaced I would consider doing it (less than $100 to do). Certainly get a surveyor. Anything else, feel free to email me at bwehmer@columbus.rr.com.

Try Angus Yachts

I purchased a 1984 Catalina 30 from Angus Yachts located in Toronto. I believe they have two listed now. Their website I believe is www.Yachtsoftoronto.com. With your American$$ you might save some money.

used catalina

I know of a c 30 that is in great shape... by be gone by now but worth a try. It is a 1988 at Coney's marina in Huntington. I know the previous owner. Also try Hellier Yacht sales in New London, CT. I bought my used c27 from them... they we great!!! Hellier is a Catalina dealer and ussually has very good used boats. I bought my boat from them (a $10,000 1982) they treat me like I bought the newest, biggest boat in the yard. When I upgrade, that's where I am going. Mention "Temptation II"

Thanks for the replies

I checked some of the dealers suggested, however all were fin keels ( I need a wing). Think I might have found the right boat, however the price seems a bit high. It is a 1989 Catalina 30, wing keel and fully loaded. From radar, plotter, GPS, stereo, autopilot, refrigiation, new inflatable and new outboard, and davits. The list goes on and on. Blue book value is listed at $30,000, however averaging 8 boats on Yacht World shows an average of $39,000. The Universal engine hour meter shows just over 700 hours. What does everybody feel would be a fair offer (prior to survey).

Bought an '89 in October

... for just under $30k. The equipment list is good but doesn't match yours -- no radar, GPS, plotter, stereo, inflatable or outboard. The hours (half of yours) confirmed light fresh water use, however. My impression is that it's a buyer's market: don't be swayed too much when the seller/dealer and even the surveyor tell you they think the boat is valued in the upper 30s. I came in pretty low (~85%) off of an aggressive (ie, low) asking and got it with only a small move up. (You may need to adjust for the season too; I'm told fall prices are ~10% less than spring prices, at least in northern climates.) Like anything else, research your market (as you obviously are), draw your own conclusions, make a fair offer, and be prepared to walk away. There are a lot of great boats out there, and a lot of people now who need to sell them. Good luck!

Why do you need a wing?

Is it that your marina is to shallow? If you can do it I would suggest buying a fin. I owned a C-30 fin and a good friend had the C-30 wing There is a big difference in the sailing characteristics between wing and fin. The wing will round up much quicker and requires a lot more "tuning" to get the helm balanced. Just my .02 worth. Good luck in your search. When we bought our C-36 it took almost a year to find the right boat. On the surface it seems that there are a lot of 30's for sale but as you probably already know many of them are trashed...If you want any C-30 input feel free to e-mail me. You can get my e-mail address through my C-36 Home Page link. Just click "Related Link" and you will be directed to my home page. Rodd C.

C30 Wing

My C30 is a1988 TR It has every thing a30 footer could have .Refer, winch ,Raython 4000 and gps Interphase and tons of chips .Nice AM FM CD receiver With 6 speakers and a6 CD changer gas grill hooked to bulk tank in rear locker ,wind speed depth instruments'bimmie, dodger, heart power inverter ,smart charge Battery regulator 4gell cells One 240ah house one 180 starting and 2 155 for refer, 75 amp alt ,ect. My boat has some nice stuff and sails great with 150 genoa out on the 32" bow sprit .The wing keel balances nicely with the tallrig bowsprit option by pulling your main sail traveler to windword about 10" with a littl( tuning)I can sail with all most no presher on the rudder at all.The wing keel lets me sneek into docking and morings allmost antywhere. But there is allways a (but) after two survays and alot of time spent boat shoping the east coast. My boat has some wet deck about 4' by 6" on starbord side and my compresson post was sqweeeeshyyy. What a bummmmmer! No silver lineing here.Im allmost all fixed up now ,with the help of Catalina yatchs and about 10 weekendsof time My deck looks alittle funny now where I cut it open to replace wood and dry it out. Next year I will try to put the nonskid back on.but in the spring of 2001 I payed 31500with tax and delivery to LKGNY from Oysterbay Long Island Ithink delivery was 1000bucks asking price was39999.I payed about 25% less then asking I had another deal for a 1986 C30 tr asking price was 35000 we setteled on 27500 this boats inside teak was waterstained and mildued anddid not seam to clean up with bleach and oil but it was January and the boat was in a snow drift at Navey point Marine in lake Onterio Ny. Mike showed me the boat he was a great guy. The sails where new , the outside of the boat was in very good shape and there was a doger it was a5' draftIt look like a racers boat with almost no gear and asmall portable radio. The deal fell throw becouse the moreing I had was rented the same day Isaw the boat. The next choice was in aboat club at the dock My wife and kids liked that. And this slip had only 4'of water. I saw one other wing keel C30 1990 It was anice boat and had all the standard gear. andIt was in very good shape they where asking 43500 and they cane down to 38000 firm and got it in the spring .I feel if you want aC30 wing in very good shape you have to pay close to asking price becouse the boats that are real nice get bought on the spot befor they hit the open market. The repeairs I made to my boat would cost around 3000 to 4000 bucks and I would have been glad to pay it but after ayear of talk I did the job my self.I do like sailing better then grinding fiberglass .I mite have been better off paying alittle more and geting a newer boat but who knows .You have to start looking on the net twice aday for new boats being listed and drive to seethem the same day they are listed, becouse by the weeked they will have deal pending in red under there pic. You could have a Oday 30 wing keel with a open transom and swim platform for about 23000 +or-and there are abunch of them around. Good Luck I hope Ive helped JOlson LGNY
