Hello everyone. I have been considering going to sail from power and, I must admit, this site has really helped my wife and I. We are considering the 40.5 b/c 1. It looks to be great with children (we have 2 and one on the way) 2. We have a lot of nearby islands to cruise around 3. You give this particular boat great reviews What do you recommend for gear, we're thinking the electric winch and a autopilot. Also, some things to avoid... Thanks in advance!

Excellent Choice!

We have a 1997 model that we purchased new. I would recommend replacing the halyard winch with an electric unit, I put in the Lewmar OP-2 and am happy with it. Without it, raising the main is a real chore. As a side note, after two years of problems with great friction of the mainsail in the mast, I am considering some kind of batcar/track system. I hate to spend the $$ but if you can't get the mainsail down promptly it is a safety issue. I found that with the full battened main the need for track lubing and cleaning is frequent and a nuisance. I can recommend the Autohelm autopilot model 7000. It is invaluable, I can't imagine how I got along without one in the past. A bimini over the cockpit is great to cut the sun uv rays. Also an electric windlass is great. Email me if you want further opinions. Rich

Great Boat

We bought our 40.5 new two years ago and really love it. We always check out new boats at the boat shows, and I can honestly tell you we have not yet found a boat of any size or make (even in a higher price range) that would make us want to trade our 40.5 The floorplan suits us to a "T" (My wife, myself, one cat, and occasionally two grandkids or another couple) It sails fast and comfortably and I don't even think about reefing until the wind exceeds 25 knots. The electric halyard winch is a must unless you want lots and lots of arm exercise, and I certainly would not be without autopilot either. I have the Autohelm 5000 fully integrated with all the other instruments and it works really well. Go for it, you’ll love it too. Henry

Excellent boat

This is a fabulous boat, and is one of Hunter's gems. Just try to find a good used one in the market, and you'll appreciate that they're rare. Send me your email address, and I'll give you some in dept hints. aboas@cabletest.com

Mast Height

I purchased a 1994 H40.5 last November and for the most part am glad I did. The biggest complaint I have is the mast height. On the East Coast there are several 65 ft fixed bridges. I haven't hit any yet, but several have been uncomfortably close. I have to make sure not to pass under any at high tide or when the waves are kicking up. It is a nuisance that must be taken under consideration any time I plan on moving the boat. If the weather doesn't permit ocean sailing, then it adds to the planning process for the ICW.
