Wife gave me one of the West Marine DSC capable VHF's for Christmas and I was wondering how much trouble is it to connect it to my Garmin 498. The GPS is on a removable mount at the pedestal with the connecting wire and plug coming up through the pedestal and the VHF is/will be mounted below at the Nav station.

The garmin should have several plugs with wires for the purpose of sending the signal to the vhf or there should be designated wires. In turn the vhf should have designated wires to receive the signal. All you have to do is match them up and determine if you will need a quick disconnect at the helm. It works

Need to look for NEMA input…
…and output on both units. If you don’t have the manuals, they can usually be found on the manufactures website. You might as well connect both, so the NEMA output of the VHF to the NEMA input of the GPS, and the NEMA input to the VHF gets the NEMA output of the GPS. I’ve been told that you can’t harm either unit if you get them reversed. It just will not work. Only requires very light wire - like 22 guage. Lastly, I think the DSC number needs to be registered.

I have an ICOM VHF radio. The radio already has the GPS receiver jack leading from the radio. Check your radio owner's manual. Likewise in the Garmin 498 owners manual (Pg 93) the pin location for ground and NMEA out connections are shown. I haven't run any wire yet but hope to do so before Spring.

I did it last winter
Bought 15 feet of two strand shielded wire from Lowes. You just need to look at the instructions from the GPS and the radio to determine which two wires from each need to match up with the other. The hardest part for me was running the wire [center cockpit boat]. After I got the wire run, a 3 hour process, the wire matching was pretty easy. I works great, too.
