I was at my favorite breakfast haunt in Long Beach (Alamitos Bay - "Schooners or Later" for you So Ca local guys) talking to some sailing buddies I've known for years. I've been there a lot lately getting the last of my salt water fixes because at the end of this month I'll be leaving So Ca permenently for eventually Tucson, AZ, with a short lay over in Lake Havasu while our house in Tucson is being built. Anyway, one of the guys had a friend with him and he brought up sail trim controls. The problem I had was the sailor confused the sail trim controls for the main and jib so much as to their form and function that I didn't know what he was talking about. The more he talked, the more insistant he became and he eventually had my underware so twisted up I could not follow what he was saying. He was mixing and matching everything. What finally saved me was I remembered I was there years ago from a sail trim standpoint. I had everything all balled up. What I told him was STOP TALKING!! Then I said, now lets get back to the basics. From there I explained draft depth, draft position, twist and angle of attack and outlined the sail trim controls for the main and jib that control each of those element plus what happens to each when you push or pull them. At the outset, he started to interupt me and throw in misconceptions but after a few more stop talkings he finally listened. This whole thing took less than 10 minutes but the sad part for me was, I don't think he heard a word I said. I could read it in his eyes, which told me he thought I was full of crap!! On the way home, my friend called me on the cell and told me the guy said after you left that your full of crap. See, I knew it.

Some people....

...are sooo intrenched with their own ideas that they can't see the forest for the trees anymore. Same thing goes for politics, religion and many other contravercial subjects. They know better, and you can't tell them a thing...... Best to just right it off as 'well I tried'.

You should always carry a copy of your book. If they don't pay attention you can always shove it up their nose. BTW, My mate is getting real tired of me fiddling with the controls. "Sit down and stop touching the lines!" Jim S/V Java

Jim S: Your mate and my wife must be sisters!! I get the same story - "why can't you just relax and just sail the boat?". I mean what do you think I'm doing as this beauty does not sail itself but I keep my mouth shut because I want her to continue to sail with me. I've known married guys for over 10 years and I've NEVER seen their wives on the boat or dock and I don't want to join them so sometimes I "sneak" adjustments or wait until she takes a nap then I mess with the sails to my hearts content. Fortunately, I can get pretty close on the first shot but the wind is always changing and I have no choice but I have to be quick about it. Some guys say racing makes them a better sailor but in my case my wife has made me a better sail trimer as I don't have a lot of time to fool around with adjustments. It is even worse when we have guests on board. Her first warning before they arrive is to shut up about your sail trim stuff so normally, my tack is to interest the husband in sailing but most of our male friends are woosses so if that does not work I start on the wife. Surprisingly they are very interested and I can get always get them to take the helm. All kidding aside, I just love tweeking the sail trim controls. I find it very relaxing.
