We try to time it so both spans are straight up as we pass through. Some captains will try to pass through with the spans open just enough to get through, if there is a mechanical failure at that point she can come down quickly. We have been stuck for hours as a bridge failed just as they tried to lift it so we could pass through. I think we go through about 35 of these bridges from Miami to Stuart, about 100 miles. The majority are between Miami and Palm Beach. I think the most we did in a day was 18.
