Confessions of a lurker…
For over two years I have been lurking about in the shadows of this web site, getting valuable tips and occasionally strongly disagreeing with this or that post, but not commenting myself. If you want to stop reading right now, I can tell you that I am not going to query or comment in this post. My philosophy was if I just wait long enough someone will ask the question that I want answered, and sure enough, it has always happened, especially when I use the archives.
I have been around boats for a long time. I’m 62 years old, certainly not the oldest but older than most on this site, but far from the most experienced. Though I know something of sailing in the Chesapeake, mostly what I know is that I do not know nearly as much as I would like to know. I am fortunate enough to be able to afford a used Island Packet IP32, which I cannot back into a slip to save my life without the help of another hand on board. (I so envy the way the work boats in my marina zoom into their slips.)
But that is not what I want to talk about. I want to talk about the really great info I have gotten from this site over the past two plus years. And I want to say a special thanks to Ross, Mainesail, and Charlie Cobra. To Mainesail, I used to turn wrenches (I appreciate your tech info) and lived in New Hampshire for 16 or so years, frequently taking biz trips to Bangor and Portland. I still have friends in Maine (especially Butch Foss in Bangor). I imagine your accent in your writing. And Ross, my guess is that you are kind of laid back, full of knowledge, and kind enough to share it. And Charlie, well, you seem like one of the guys I raced motorcycles with back in the seventies, you’re still laying it over in the turns… would like to do a few laps with you.
I am going to venture a little farther this year than normal; maybe sailing to Florida this fall, so I may be in need of some more specific advice in a timelier manner, so will not be able to just lurk about waiting for someone to ask the right question.
