If it turned, yes. It would be totally insane to try to get around something like that if it was unpredictable. All my life, growing up, they always turned from their forecast course. Forecasting and computer modeling just wasnt accurate enough then though, it was in its infancy. Maybe it still isnt accurate enough, maybe they've just been really lucky and they're due for a blunder. But the accuracy they (NOAA) have established is remarkable, and I feel quite confident it will follow the track they have calculated, more or less. IOW, it shouldnt fall west of NOLA, and it shouldnt go as far east as Panama City. We will see.

There was a recent thread by a guy who was heading off into the Caribbean from Florida. I went back 4 pages and couldnt find it, but wondered how he was doing. My prayers are he is well south of the predicted track by now and scooting further south as we speak, putting miles behind him. Lots and lots of miles. His trip was what got me wondering about the subject of escape. I really hope he's escaped.

In any case its a moot point now, escape is no longer an option. Well, safe escape anyway.

Drove down to Panama City and wrapped the main sail cover, dodger, bimini, and secured the furler to the pulpit so it cannot let out. Also secured the dinghy to the dock. I double all my lines all the time, so I just needed to let out some line for the surge. Now it is just a matter of what is going to happen and making sure the insurance policy is in the safe. The marina will adjust my lines if necessary.

BTW, I would never want to ride out a direct hit of a hurricane if I have a choice. My children need a father much more than I need a boat. We did stay on the boat for Debbie, but that was just a rain storm.

Be careful folks. I rode one out years ago on a ship and that is an experience I hope never to repeat. Even a Category 1 and a 400 foot long ship in the thick of it is something you don't want to experience.

Or you sure you don't want to remove all of that? The boatyard where our boat won't even let us take it out of the water with the sails on.

Whatever you do hope you and everyone else in the area comes through in good shape,

Locking down the furler will not prevent the furled headsail from blowing out, powering up, heeling the boat to a knockdown, smashing the boat against piles, and other general mayhem. Removing biminis / dodgers and other deck gear is the neighborly thing to do - they do tremendous damage when they go flying.

I did not take pictures but all the items are wrapped tight and tied in many places with 3/8 inch rope. A whole lot of rope would have to fail for those items to open.

Jib blown out

Just a few weeks ago I was over in Gulfport, and about midnight a thunder storm blew through. A boat two slips down from me, had his jib get loose. This is just your everyday thunderstorm, gusts maybe to 40 mph. It took three people over two hours to get it under control, and that was mostly because there wasn't much left of the jib.
