I am taking steps to hook up my Garmin 192C GPS chart plotter to the onboard laptop computer. Have the wiring diagram to install a serial cable head beween the computer and the GPS. Now I need some software that will take in the GPS data and show my track and position on my laptop with WIN XP. Looking for a software recommendation. Seems like the name brand tracking computer software is a bit expensive. Anybody found a good program for the GPS track on a laptop ?? RD

GPS software

Bob, there are a lot of good choices out there. I personally use Seaclear II. Its free, easy to use, will use NOAA maps that you can download, and it works with my Garmin V handheld like a champ. Just google it and go from there. If ya dont like it, chunk it. Cheers

ditto, seaclear

Ditto comments about Seaclear. Seaclear's manual tells you how to connect the devices. Big plus is updated charts are free from NOAA. See http://www.sping.com/seaclear/

nRoute Software

On the Garmin website there is excellant software, nRoute, free that works well with my backup 76S. I think it is compatible with most current Garmin products.

GPS/COMPUTER UPDATE

For the replys received so far- many thanks. I have looked into the SeaClear progam and will install it in my Win98 laptop. On the SeaClear web page they put in a plug for an operating system software called "Wine". I am also going to use that on the laptop once I have a better handle on SeaClear and the GPS serial cable interface. At the start of the year I added a Garmin 192C ChartPlotter to the electronic suite in my Hunter Legend 35. Spent most of Sunday AM watching (listening - that is) to the talk shows and learning how to actually use this GPS. The one item that I was looking for, and finally found, was the VMG (velocity made good) feature. Now I have to figure out how to use the info provided while on the water. In any case - thanks again guys - I'll keep the list up to speed as to just how the software can help. RD
