Is a compression test on a Universal M-25 a job I can do myself? Any advice will be appreciated.

Yes, but you need the right stuff

A compression test on a diesel is not really different than on a gasoline engine. However you need a diesel compression gauge and the correct adapters that thread into the glow plug hole. I presume that your engine does have a glow plug. If not, then I think you would have to remove the injectors and have an adapter for those threaded holes. IMO that would be much more complex. The diesel compression gauge reads at least to 1000psi where a gasoline gauge reads to about 350psi. I've done compression readings on a GM 5.7 diesel engine in a car and the proceedure is the same as a gasoline engine. Remove all the glowplugs, and (very important!) disable the fuel supply so that the injectors don't blast fuel into the cylinders and out the open plug holes. If you don't disable the fuel, you will get huge clouds of fuel vapor blasting out of the cylinders and will fill your boat with a fuel vapor cloud. I can't imagine the clean-up that would be required. Attach the gauge and crank until the gauge stops at a peak reading. This usually takes 5-6 revolutions. Diagnose per usual.
