I recently bought an o day 22, 1976 model, and i really want to redo the interior, especially the foward bulkheads. the stbd. 1/2 bulkhead was easy to remove, it is the port side with the stove/sink combo that is posing a problem. the (i'm guessing) compression post at the centerline is holding in the bulkhead. i don't want to break it in order to remove/replace the sink area. sorry if this is a stupid question, but how do you remove it without damaging it? is this piece structural, as i believe it is? any assistance will be greatly appreciated. when finished, i'll post before/after photos thanks in advance, scott steinbrecher

it's all improtant

I have had a 1974 oday 22 for 3 years now and have learned that all bulkheads are important!! Do not remove any of them if you plan to put the boat to the test of wind -- the more wind the more stress!! the side bulkheads are connected to the side stays for the mast - Do not compromise this system - or else stay out of wind. Check the arcives before modifying the design of on oday!!!!! Algae

Bulkheads

Hey Scott: I have a 1979 and it's bulkheads are structural. The shrouds from the mast are bolted through them. The bulkheads are bolted to flanges made in the fiberglass inner liner. Presumably there's some solid material around those flanges. I reckon that you can unscrew the flange fasteners and slide the bulkhead out for replacement or repair. a major project to say the least and one I would not recommend without proper research. The galley unit is screwed to blocking on the deck and the bulkhead and is removable. You'll need to disconnect the sink water pump infeed and the drain line first. That's a contortionists dream there! It's snowing like mad up here in NY, and us sailors are depressed. Keep the posts coming while we dream of the next summer's sailing!
