I am installing a Dwyer mast hinge (thier terminology...I thought it was a tabernacle). The Dwyer folks gave me conflicting advice as to how to fasten the hinge to the deck. One guy told me to use screws, the other said to through bolt it and use a backing plate. The theory behind screw use is that if the mast goes, it will not destroy the coach roof top.I opted for through bolts because of fears that screws, no matter how well installed, will leak. I made a stainless steel backing plate and fitted it in place. That's when I discovered that the original compression post positioning appears to be two or three inches off the centerline and in any event is not directly under the mast. Is this the original design or was the boat modified somewhere along the line. If it is the original design, is it worth trying to place the post directly under the backing plate? this will narrow the passageway into the head by a couple of inches, but I can live with that. Thanks for the info and advice.
