Looking at purchasing a 37cc. Boat is in great shape except I noticed that the deck around the mast was sagging. Inside, the floor is sagging, bathroom door rubs. It appesrs as if the culprit is below the compression post?? Is this usually the case?? Had the boat surveyed and surveyor agreed tha it is sagging roughly 1.5". He did not seem to think it was a big job to correct??? How acessable is the area below the post and has anyone tackled it before. As mentioned, boat is in great shape besides this issue, not sure if it's a big deal or not?? Thanks

Without seeing this boat,

I would be hesitant to make any definitive remarks. I would say, however, that the amount of "sag" you mentioned would appear to be pretty serious to me. If the mast is "sagging" that much, it also means that the standing rigging could be placing an unbalanced load on the hull/deck joints unless it has been slacked off. All in all, not a good situation. I personally believe that rebuilding the mast step to seat the mast where it's supposed to be could be a major job and a potential deal breaker unless the price of the boat has been adjusted to reflect this condition -- and you are willing to take this job on, either yourself or to have aa professional do it. I would also be concerned with your surveyor's remarks stating this would not be a "big job to correct." In any event, if you continue to be interested in this boat, I would (1) get another opinion from a qualified surveyor (not a full survey, but just an opinion on this particular problem) and (2) ask a professional repair shop for an opinion and/or estimate on what it would take to repair this problem. Again, not having seen this boat/problem, it may be that it really is not that big a deal. But if it is, you want to know about it before it becomes your problem.

Just did this...

Just went thru this job on a Bombay Clipper 31..deck core was gone for several inches around the Mast Step..nothing alot of Epoxy and 'Glass did'nt fix. This is a friends boat not mine so job was hired out to local "Professional" who did do nice work.Cost overall was around $2,000.00.PERSONALLY-if I came on a boat as described by you and could do the work myself I'd be "in negotiations" with the current owner as this is a good bargaining chip..if I were going to hire the work out..I'd have to think long and hard on it..unless the owner was very flexible in his asking price..enuff so I could pay for all the work to be done and still feel I got a decent deal on the boat.Dont be afraid to walk away from a boat deal..there are plenty more where that one came from..better deals...better boats. Best of luck>>> David
