Compression Block and Mast Step

My mast step is sunken, the head door is off by 1/8-1/4" and the compression block has a crack in it. Someone said that it's possible that the mast step is still good. What's the best way to confirm? The casting on the step has been removed for inspection. I'm not opposed to a core sample

A mast step on the cabin deck is usually screwed or bolted in place. Removing the mast step gives you access to looking into these holes. You can determine if the deck is sound. If not then core samples may be warranted.

There was 3/4" of glass and gelcoat on top of the plywood mast step. I dug down in two locations to see if the core was dry. It was. Must be the compression post that's making the mast step appear sunken.

What does the bottom of the compression post sit on? Compression posts, even cracked, usually don't compress. This problem is most often a problem with the deck or keel step compressing.

I mistyped. It's the compression block that's the issue. Catalina decided that a wood block under the compression post, in the bilge was a wise idea
