What colors do you currently have and are they the ones with the "dots" that capture the compound?
MS-
I have the orange, yellow, blue, black (I think) and white Lake Country foam pads, all have the "dots" or indentations in the pad surface. My intent is to use the Presta compound, Ultra Creme and Chroma 1500 products. I'll also use Collinite 885 wax, but having seen comment from you about it's durability in the south (I'm in Texas) I may seek another wax alternative.
Thanks for your reply!

I really need to compound & wax my boat. I was trying to save up for the makita 9927 (broke), but I came across a cheapie the other day at Harbor Freight Tools. It looks like the 9227, feels like it, has variable speed, 200-3350 rpm. it was on sale for $34. I figured what the heck, I will try it. I already have a bunch of 3m pads leftover from a job, so I will experiment. It seems to be heavy duty. I tested it on a golf cart and it didnt even slow down with heavy pressure. the speed is controlled by a thumb wheel.

what do ya think?

For $34.00 what do you have to loose. Hell my wife and I I drink more wine/booze than that in a good weekend..;) We expect a full report on its performance!!:) Let us know how it works out.

Surprised..?

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=92623

link to the tool. the ad says 3000 rpm, the box says 3350 rmp?
And for $34.99 you're surprised...?:D Geeze it's HFT..;)

It looks like they totally knocked off the Makita. I'll be curious to see how it holds up. BTW the boat yard I store at uses Makita 9227C's and in talking to the guys I asked how many boats they will buff in an average spring. They do about 35-40 boat "buff and puffs" per years plus bottom sanding, metal sanding and general fiberglass sanding with 7' 36+ grit discs and the machines see about 150-200 days of use per year. The Makita's need repair about once every two years or so, usually brushes or power cords or switches, at professional level use. I would think the knock off should at least complete your boat a few times..

P.S. When I asked Billy about repairs for the Fein tools they also use he looked at me, smiled and said, "repairs?"...;)

I have a buffer that looks very much just like your HFT machine. I've had it for three years and I buff my h40.5 each Spring. I bought it in a package with a 3M buffing pad and some 3M products for about $80. I've loaned it to others for their boats and so far no problems with the tool.

I do wish it was lighter, but that's my only complaint. It should give you good service.
