Phil, whatdya saying here? Is this Mr. B with tongue-in-cheek??? On the other hand, the rear of that bulb looks a lot like the business end of an F51 with the prop off. So, this chump stands stumped.

Actually the boat rotates

The large wings at the very aft end of the bulb are kevlar reinforced FRP. The wings are symetrical and balanced. When the boat is moving through the water they generate lift and "fly". when the boat heels the wings try to stay paralelle to the plane of the suface of the water. The boat heels and draft is extended automatically beyond the bow wave. There is some effect due to the change in hull form and bow wave pressure as the boat heels that cause the wings to deflect with the net effect being to increase angle of attack creating more lift toward to the leeward wing and causing the wing to rotate deeper in to the water. The back of the bulb and the hub of the wings have matching stops that prevent the wing from rotating more than 40 degees about the center line of the bulbs axis. This design actually takes the boat with a shoal draft 5'10" and makes it behave like a deep draft boat when the boat is sailing to weather. When motoring, downwind, or at rest the boat is again in shoal draft form. This is a design from B&R we tested it on a Hunter 19 and observed it through a window in the hull and played around with different wing forms. Pretty cool stuff. The entire project (HC50) has been thought out over the past 5-6 years. Hull form testing at the Royal Institute of technologies test tank in Stockholm proved the designs. The aim was to produce a hull shape that would plane easily, maintain speed, and increase seaworthyness. This hull form makes the boat easy to steer with less weather helm at higher angles of heel and give super directional stability and a reduced tendency to broach in heavy surfing conditions. There are many many other advantages offshore with this hull form, come see us in Annapolis the boat left yesterday we'll be there to explain the whole deal. JB

Too Cool, That HC50,...

...and a worthy signature product, Jim. I can't make Newport but there ought to be some very strong buzz on this in the sail press. Bet you had fun with this millenium design. (Maybe it should be HC50-2000.) Wouldn't be surprised to see some owner's regattas just as soon as there is more than one in a harbor. Congradulations to the whole design team. Rick D.
