Being cognizant of the risks and making informed choices is fear mongering? Ignoring a risk does not make it go away. As I stated the risk is low, but it is a risk. Each person needs to make informed decisions according to their own situation. Not sure why that might be controversial.
Introducing people to the sport by telling all the things that can go wrong and implying they must know how to respond before leaving the dock is perhaps the worst way to introduce people to sailing. In effect you are telling potential sailors that sailing is an terribly dangerous sport and unless you have the special knowledge I have you won't be safe.

Wow ... you got all that? That was a long and winding road.

We have never had anyone turned off by knowing, for example, how to use the radio, if they had to. In general, we find that people like feeling empowered on the boat.

You would withhold that information?
