I am considering a Hunter 27 that has a bad motor. I am not exactly sure the year of the boat at this time, but it appears to be a mid-80's model. The motor that just came out of the boat is a Yanmar YSD-8 (at least that is what I am told). It is a Yanmar 8HP diesel, but I am not sure the YSD-8 is the correct designation. The raw water pump on the front of the motor has corroded to bits and I haven't been able to find any parts for this motor. My question to the group is 1) are there parts for these motors and if so where? 2) what are some other compatible motors for this boat that I can consider looking for as a replacement? Thank you very much for helping me research this issue.

I have a 1981 27' Hunter with a 1GM in it it rates at 6.5 Hp which I ok. I have found every part I have needed at http://shop.torresen.com/marine_die...de&contentsection=yanmar&contentname=catalogs

I dont recall seeing your exact engine in the list, but it will not hurt to take a look. One note is that there are restrictions on where Torresen can ship, so check their area map. If they will not service Charleston, then I am sure you can fine another place.

I read of guys putting new 1GM 10 engines in the older 27's. I have also read of 2 GMs being put in as well. I believe what you are looking at would be matching foot print area and wieght most of all.

Thanks I will check that out. Yeah I am looking for a compatible engine mount set-up so no modifications would be necessary.

Maybe a SB-8?

I don't believe "YSD-8" is correct.. at least a google search turns up nothing on it.. it could possibly be a 'YS-8" which is a older Yanmar 8hp engine, but I'm not sure if they were ever used on the H27.. the YS-12's (12Hp) were used on larger Hunters for a while though. My '77 H27 had a Yanmar SB-8 8Hp diesel from the factory, and they were replaced with the 1GM series in later models. If you have the SB-8, the impeller part number is #104211-42070 and the cover gasket is #104211-42090. I don't have a source for the parts handy as it's been a while since I bought any, but I'm sure you can find them readily available online.

Cheers,
Brad

Seems like you should be able to find a plate screwed onto the block somewhere with some info. But if the engine is out I guess you have checked it thoroughly. I think that I would take some closeup pictures and send them to Mack Boring. I am guessing that they are your regional Yanmar parts supplier out of New Jersey.

Yeah, I don't own the boat yet, I am just trying to do a little research to see if it will be possible to work on the motor. I am going to get the serial number off of the motor as soon as I can. I realize now that would have been some very valuable information. Thanks.

I have a 1981 H27 with origional Yanmar. its a 1GM, 7.5 hp, from my research this was installed thru middle of 1981. there is a hull # on transom. these are realitively simple engines but still expensive to work on. If it is highly corroded it is probally not repairable and u should search 4 a replacement. u r looking at 3-8 K, depending on how much u can do yourself. Otherwise. put on outboard mtr bracket, buy 4-8 hp longshaft, and go sailing.

I did not think it was too expensive when I overhauled my 1GM. Not only that, but with a manual in hand, you can do everything yourself.

I will have to say that replacing the transmition set me back $1100. And that was with installing it myself.

I know my Yanmar is original. I took the whole thing out of my boat and took it home with me where I could walk around it and work at rebuilding it. I even managed to bench test it out of the boat.

But man do I feel good when she starts and runs smooth becasue I know it was me that made it that way.. I think they can be mistreated and then brought back to life with a little work and a whole lot of love. I know my 1GM fits that build.

Thanks, I would really like to keep the inboard, and I am a bit of a shadetree myself, so I know the feeling of having YOUR engine in the boat. I think the Trans is OK, and I believe the motor will run fine if I can get the cooling system on the front refurbished. But as we all know, you never know what you will find when you start digging.

You are right, you never know wat you find. I know i didn't expect the stuff I found.

As for the tranny, I think the biggest issue I faced was water in it. The tell tail sign is when you take the dip stick out and it is milky white, watch out.

As a shade tree, you would have no problems with this engine. Get a Yanmar manual and a parts book and you will find that these will be your two best tools. And you can also buy parts seperate that will allow you to salvage good pieces and only buy what you need.
