Compass window aft of companionway

So, I replaced all the portlight rubber on #712, (thanks Bill Bach,
it is great, and looks very nice).

However, I discovered that the moulding for the 6-1/2" round compass
viewing window is a different extrusion. The fiberglass is thinner,
here, and the space between the glass and the fiberglass is
narrower. Of course I determined this after cutting out the old
rubber. That leaves me with an engineering problem. The rubber for
the other windows will not work as is.

Who has changed out or dealt otherwise with this horizontal port?
When did Albin quit including them in the Vega? I am thinking of
cutting aluminum frames and bolting them inside and out, with the
glass bedded in between. Any thoughts on this subject?

Thanks, Doug, #712, Bainbridge Island, WA

Hi Doug;

I just cut a piece of (plexi) glass, drilled 4 holes,
applied caulking, and bolted it on. Works great.

Doug: I glassed that port in and covered it with a piece of teak. A
bulkhead compass replaced the old one. Not so subject to influence from the engine
just below. Glad that your windows worked out. Bill Bach, V 1071

I bought a round access hatch for about $12, and installed it in place of
the compass window. I believe they are still listed in the West Catalogue
