My compass, apparently original equipment, had an air bubble when I bought the boat a few years ago. This keeps growing. I've taken the compass off and have brought it home under the impression that it shouldn't be too hard to fix it. But now that it's on my workbench, I thought I might ask ... has anybody out there tried this?

Rebuild

Not sure how much this will help -we are new owners of a 30 and the compass has a bubble. The yacht broker we dealt with was very knowlegable and a do-it-yourself guy - as is my husband. He said the compass would have to be rebuilt at a cost of about $50. I'm thinking if there were a DIY method that was cost and time feasible - he would have told us.

Response to Debra ...

Debra: I'm a "do it yourself" guy, too and I can tell you that there are some things I'll do that others won't, and some things others won't that I will--it's a personality thing, I guess. Actually, it turns out that there is a pretty easy fix. I'll try it and report back. The thing about a $50 rebuilt compass is that a brand new one--bright, shiny and UNDER WARRANTY-- costs only about $150, so $50 is way too much to spend to rebuild it. I'll let you know how it goes.
