Ernie, Viking Optics is in MA. and does a great job. Ship your compass to them and they will refurbish and upgrade it.

Ernie ... have you thought of doing a rebuild yourself? Last year I replaced a cracked globe on my Ritchie and put in a new gasket and diaphragm ... worked great ... catch you down in Nyack in the summer! (do you sail out of the Nyack Yacht Club?)
If it's a Ritchie send it directly to them in Pembroke MA. had my navigator done by them a couple of years ago. charge was just over $100 and basically got a like new compass in return. they replaced everything except the original housing.
Thanks everyone for your info. Yes I do sail out of Nyack Boat Club (as Caleb knows) and the compass is cloudy. The boats currently in the Chesapeake and I need the compass for the trip to NY. But I will take quick look to see if I can take it apart without doing further damage.

Viking rebuilt my compass last summer. Had a cracked globe. Did a great job at a reasonable price with a quick turn-around. Very satisfied with the result.

just got off the phone with Viking.....i have a globe master sp5 and was quoted $245.00 referb ...including a new globe....they will also sell the oil and o ring if that is all you need......they were most helpful in info department....based on the conversation i will be buying the oil and o ring for now and see how that goes....but after talking to them if i need further help i will be sending it to them....very nice folks.....

I had my Ritchie repaired a few years ago by a very knowledgeable company who explained the whole process of how the oil is replaced so there are no bubbles in it after years of service. Seems that after the oil is replaced in the globe, the whole assembly is then subjected to very high vacuum for 24 hours to remove any dissolved air in the oil. The globe is then sealed off. There is a diaphragm (which eventually leaks years down the road and causes the original problem all over again) which absorbs thermal expansion and contraction.

We spoke with Viking before sending our compass, they gave us a quote on the phone. Once they received the compass they called and confirmed the quote and offered the LED upgrade which we did. They returned it to us right on time and it looked like a new compass. All for less than than $200.00.
