Has anyone used Viking Optical's compass repair services? If so, what was your opinion of their service and cost?

The dome on my Helmsman binnacle compass has cracked and has leaked most of its fluid. As a consequence I am looking at a repair rather than a replacement at this point.

I looked into this

I looked into compass repair fairly recently, and ended up not going to the bother. The cost vs the benefit just didn't work for me. For very little more than repair, I found brand new on Ebay. Think I'm gonna go that route. Good Luck with yours.

Thanks, Easy...

Their price for a dome and seal is around $30 plus fluid and shipping. WM has Ritchies on sale and Defender is even less. Jamestown Dist has the best price new so far at about $125. Still makes a repair look less costly.

Yes. I had them rebuild my Ritchie last year and they did a fantastic job. Great communication and fast turn around. Price was about half of a new compass.

Thanks, Tim...

for the prompt reply and the high confidence factor. Looks like I'll pull it off the boat and ship it out Monday.

I had a company called Island Compass South fix mine. It was a complete nightmare. I was going to go with Viking Optical but decided to go the other way. What a mistake. It took months!

I had my compass repaired by Viking. They are a few miles from where I live. They did a great job and I second the recommendation.

And for our Canadian Members.....

Brewers marine did an excellent job on my Ritchie Globemaster SP5-C (worth close700 bucks CDN) for about 100 bucks.

They replaced the fluid, damper, dome, and light. Good to deal with and the total was in line with the quote.

Much cheaper than a replacement.

(I have zero affiliation with them other than I am a happy customer)
This is a great option for Canadian sailors rather than dealing with customs, etc shipping stuff to the states and back.
