Hi all, have two questions for you. First, the compass on my newly aquired O28 has so much glazing from sunlight that I can barely read the card. Is there a way to polish the glass to see better? And second, the boat has the saildrive in it and remarkably , it runs very well. It has been in fresh water since new. I realize that parts for this motor are few and far between and am considering selling it now and using an outboard to save future headache and regain some valuable storage space. My question is how much is a reasonable asking price? Has anyone pulled the saildrive and glassed in the hole? Any problems? Thanks in advance for any replys and thanks for the site, it has been a treasure of information.

saildrive

Jason: There is a web site out there for sail drive owners. It is saildriveowners.com. I don't have the link on this computer but if you go to a search engine (Yahoo, etc.) and enter the link the search engine will find it. The site is used by sail drive owners and there is a wealth of information from owners who have probably had your experience. For my part I had mine rebuilt last spring and it cost $2,000 for a total bebuild. That is about the cost of a comparable outboard of the size our boat will need to push it through all conditions. As I recall someone on the site had the opening in the hull glassed over and it was quite expensive but doable. As for using an outboard; if you can stand the appearance it makes all the sense in the world. Especially if you get a four stroke. It would be less noisy, less smoky and add lots of good storage. By the by I sail an O'day 28 as well and I love the boat. Good luck, Mike S/B Pitterpat, Lake Huron

Ritchie compass experience

For what it's worth, I have a Ritchie Navigator compass that had similar problems with the bowl, as well as a bubble indicating that fluid had been lost. I sent it back to Ritchie (they have a web site for infomation) and for about $100, it came back looking like a brand new compass - clear bowl, new wires, no bubble, and new rubber gasket. Not cheap but worthwhile in my book.
