I have a '77 Hunter 25. I am looking at installing a new compass in/on the starboard bulkhead by the companionway. My question is; which type of compass should I be looking for, a bulkhead mount or a bracket mount? Is one inherently better than the other? What does everyone else use? Thanks Craig S/V Wind Toy

Hi Craig, do you have one on your binnacle...

or does your boat use a tiller? I'm not sure whether I can answer your question. The main location criteria around the coaming would be interference with line handling and possible distortion from electrical circuits and/or ferrous metal. Terry

Compass Requirements

Make sure the compass you buy has an "edge reading card" so that you can see it from the helm. The dish card is okay in the binnacle but if you mount it in the bulkhead headings on the dish card will not be visible without getting up. Get a large enough one also.

Compass for h25

I mounted a bracket unit on my 25 in order to avoid drilling through the bulkhead. The added benefit is that I remove the compass from the bracket to take fixes, and when I"m not on the boat I can store it out of the weather. Regards, Jim
