Compass Mount

I would like to mount a compass on my '80 23'. The logical position is on the rear of the cabin bulkhead port side of the companionway. Unfortunately/fortunately, the Admiral and I spend a fair amount of time in the cockpit leaning against the bulkhead. A bulkhead mount could be rather uncomfortable and susceptible to damage in that location. Has anyone found a “better” spot to mound a compass? Any ideas?Shine On! Don

This is typically the best place for compass, and ALSO the best place to sit on the boat, so make sure the dome of the compass sits well into the crook or your neck and does not connect directly to the middle of your back or the back of your head. Get it as close as possible to the companionway so that at least it is off to one side when you lean in your 'easy chair' and watch the world go by off your stern. If you really make it work for you, you can wedge a small pillow against it to prop your head and shoulder on one side. The other thing to consider when you are deciding to place it to port or starboard of the companionway is where the wires will run inside the cockpit. Also ensure that any nearby fittings are non magnetic stainless steel and will not affect the compass.
