Can anyone advise me how to replenish the fluid in my Plastimo Contest 100 bulkhead mount compass. I think it might have overheated in summer heat and leaked. There is no other damage or cracks etc.

Needs repairs too

When you get an air bubble in a compass it is because you lost some fluid. You are not supposed to lose fluid. It is a sign of a failure in the compass's mechanism and should be repaired. Adding more will work for a short time until after a few expansion/contraction cycles the fluid leaks out again! This is a quote from a compass repair service's web site ......... "General Whenever you get a bubble in your compass, it is an indication of a failure in your sealing system. A bubble in almost all cases requires a trip to the repair shop. Left untended, the bubble (which is air and contains particles of water) will cause contamination of the compass fluid. In the worst case's water droplets can cause pitting of the compass dial and interior paint, which means more $$$$ to repair. Do yourself a cost saving favor, when you get a bubble do not wait to get it repaired." I have no personal interest in this link nor do I make any warranty about their service or the accuracy of the info on their site, but it makes interesting reading/thinking. I had a Richie

I had a Richie 5" bulkhead mounted compass. The diaphram sprung a leak. My compass was discontinued and you can't repair rubber diaphrams. My only solution was to purchase a new one. You can't fix 'em! Most reputable compass manufacturers will repair their current models reasonably if you send it to them. They must be repaired in a near vacuum to eliminate all air bubbles. Great Abbotts

thanks. I think it is the best small pocket cruiser in North America. I have had owners of J105 on board marveling at the quality and the outfitting.
