compass cylinder on steering pedestal replcement

The cylinder that mounts the compass on my steering pedestal is self-destructing and needs replacement.Anybody out there dealt with this?

Thanks for reply, I'll try to get a pic soon. It appears to be an Edison. I've got a few tricks up my sleeve and may attempt them first.Again,thanks for prompt reply.
