The previous owner removed the compass and heel indicator. Can anyone tell me how to replace them? What make/model would be best for the original space? What do I look for in a compass? Should I be looking for a used replacement from another Mac 25? I would really like the clinometer as well. Thanks.

Just find one that fits the hole, it probably was added by a P/O. Plastimo and Ritchie both make good units. I have a Plastimo mini contest in mine. You don't really need the heel guage, when you hear things sliding onto the cabin sole, it's time to release the mainsheet:D

Speaking of compassies and heel guages. We inherited a boat and this is our first year sailing it. We are trying to figure out how to read the compass/heel guage. It is a sunnto and has two green lines and a red line in between them. Sorry for such a stupid question, but maybe somone could help. Thanks.

Many a Compass have the heel guage on them but my Plastimo does not. I got a seperate inclinometer that measures up to 50 degrees of heel each side, (I have never gone beyond 40) which I mounted right in the center of the companionway sliding hatch under the handle. I can see it clearly and quite like being able to see how many degrees of heel the boat can take and at which point it really hardens up.
The hole that is left from removal of the old unit should be a standard size that a new one will fit, just measure the diameter and then check the instructions on the new one for hole cut size. A seperate clinometer is nice too.

Thanks for the input. I got a separate clinometer. I'll be getting a bulkhead mounted compass. Does anyone know off hand the diameter of compass to fit in the original compass location on the Mac 25?

I have a sunnto, bulkhead mount.

the 2 green lines are just reference marks to give you a feeling of where you are in relation to the magnetic reading.

in otherwords, the center (red) mark is your magnetic course, but of course you normally sit to the side, and its hard to read the red mark, so you see where the green mark is, when you are on course, then adjust accordingly.

the heel indicator is on the bottom (IIRC), in white marks, and shows the amount of heel.

edit: this is what I have, but didn't get the color card.. (but wish I did)

I don't think any compass came stock on any macgregor... so you'll need to check the catalogs on the opening and profile...

-can you take a pic w/ a ruler overlay? (or a grid paper behind it).
