Companionway Trim Re-Bedding

We have a 1984 Catalina 30 and rain has been leaking into the cabin from around the companionway trim. I've removed all the boards and will refinish them but I would like to get a recommendation for re-bedding the boards back in place. It appeared to me that the original bedding was plumber's putty due to its characteristic yellow color and softness. Is butyl tape the newer, better product for this job? I know it's recommended for all other deck applications.

For rebedding the wood life caulk is often used, but I beleive butyl tape would do a fine job as well. Whatever you do, don't use 5200 (just in case you were even thinking it)!

I pulled all the trim off of my C-22, cleaned, sanded, re coated with Cetol and then re bedded with Butyl rubber and so far, haven't had the first leak. I applied a small amount of butyl around each screw hole and then bedded each screw head with butyl and slowly tightened everything down on a warm day. It worked well for me, good luck with it.

Did you cover the entire underside of the trim piece with butyl tape, or just a bit around the holes? I re-did my sliding hatch rails and had way to much tape on them. I had a hard time getting it to squeeze out and was concerned about stripping out the holes in the wood.

When I pulled off my Catalina trim boards, there was just a single line of silicone down the middle hitting all the holes.

That's kind of what I was wondering. Making it thin enough so the boards would pull in tight, using a heatgun to soften it (working outside this winter), strategically placing it to block water intrusion, etc. I do appreciate the input.

In this location I was also wondering if there would be any oozing, from out behind vertical trim pieces, due to 105 deg weather later this summer? The plumber's putty is soft and I know it handles water around sink drain fittings pretty well, plus it addresses the temperature concern, but anything out there new and improved?

I have not had any issues with the MS butyl tape oozing. It can be an issue with some of the other brands out there.

If you put the butyl tape too thick it will ooze for a few weeks, maybe even a month after installation, but in my experience once everything is properly tightened down and stable, it does not not continue to ooze. I had it ooze for a while after redoing my stanchions and bimini frame base, but after about 2-4 weeks, depending on how thick it was on a given piece, it stopped and hasn't oozed at all since.

Even when it does ooze, it doesn't make any real mess and just takes a few minutes to clean up. I'm happy with my choice to use it, and will continue to do so in the future.
