Companionway Leaks

I am looking for some advise on the best method of fixing a leak a have at the bottom of the companionway molding. This U shaped molding has several screws that hold it in place. The screws at the bottom seem to let water into the cabin on wind driven rainy days.I want to remove the entire molding and reset it in new chaulking. But I do not know if this is the best way to approach the problem. Also what type of chaulking do I use? If you have a Hunter especially a 28' have you have the same problem?This seems to be the only source of the water as the slats (both wood and plastic) do not appear to leak.

In case it is not clear, I should have said that the "screw holes" seem to let the water in (not the screws themselves). Thanks in advance for your help!

After you fix the problem...

Michael:After you fix the problem, and Dr. Grant has you fix, you should consider having a cover made for the companionway. We did this on our H'31. It keeps the rain and dirt out. It also makes a good cover when you are down at the boat and just need a little protection. We leave it snapped at the top and leave it loose at the bottom. Help keep the warmth in and the rain and wind out.

Covers are great, but...

The previous owner had one made and it works well in this reguard (at least when the boat is in the water). For some reason, (I think it has to do with the angle of the hull) when the boat is on land in the cradle and it rains (even w/ the cover on) it still leaks as I described. I am hope a fix, plus the cover will solve this problem. Any comments?
