Companionway hatch runners

Has anyone had to fix/replace the gray plastic runners under the companionway hatch. These are the two (port and starboard) runners that the hatch slides on and disappear under the bolt-on hatch lid. My starboard one has been missing the aft end since before I bought the boat and this will be my next project. I thought of going with stainless plate. Any suggestions?

What year H37C?

My '79 has metal runners, not sure of the alloy. Are you sure yours are plastic? I never considered doing anything with mine. But the hatch itself will one day need work. The teak that has the slots for the slides has some cracks.

Plastic here also

Ed, I have plastic runners on my '79, so your runners are probably not originals. Stainless should work as a replacement.

Plastic?

You know, I am so unobservant I guess mine could be plastic. You see them every time that you open/close the boat and I still am not sure? When I think about it they are kind of a strange color. Good thing I didn't bet my retirement on it! I might get a chance to check about a week from tomorrow. It is finally supposed to stop snowing and start warming up on 3/15. At $2.15 a gallon my trips to the boat are going to be much less frequent though.

i would be that they are not plastic

There are lots of types of plastic. i would think they are not just plastic. they is a product called hdhm or something like that, that is a very resilient self lubricating plasic. that has very high density. but it remains slippey. would make a hatch work great. maybe someone will know what the proper name is. somebody on here knows everything.

Not "Plastic"

Ed You are right. It is not plastic. I am the original owner of my '84 H37C so I kow my slides are original. It is a grey high density artifical material that is slippery. I do not know the name of it but it was original so Hunter should know. Don

Aluminum?

I'm pretty sure my slides are aluminum. I think that stainless would be too hard for the plastic edge of the hatch on our h27. David Lady Lillie

Runner pictures

I will try to post this photo of my 1981 H37C companionway runner. They are definitely a hard plastic, but as you see I will need to have them fabricated out of something else.

It's Plastic

Same stuff as used on the 33 (original 33!) UHMW, HDPE or some other form of polyethylene most likely. If you're lucky you might be able to get a reasonable replacement material locally at a plastic retailer. Unfortunately I have no one good in my area anymore. I can't wait to hear the answer from Hunter --- Oh, we burnt that print 22 years ago. We just don't know. Get some slippy white conveyor plastic and make your own. It's not tough at all

Hunter says it was PVC...

and recommends going with starboard now. They were very patient and helpful. Thank you all for your input.

HDPE

HDPE (High Density Polyethylene and UHMW (Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene or poor man's teflon) are both available in an assortment of sizes from our old friends McMaster-Carr (www.mcmaster.com) Order today, arrives tomorrow, or the next day. For what it's worth, if my Cherubini H-33 needed new slides, I'd be going with the UHMW.
