Companionway Doors

I would like to replace my companionway doors with new ones i want to make. I want the panels to be plexi. How do i set yhe panels in and caulk them?

Life Caulk or Life Seal

One of the two should do you. I never can keep which is which, but the packaging usually lets you know what it will stick to.

BillP are you planning to use glazing strips

or do you plan to build the door around the glass? That also makes a difference in the choice of bedding compounds.

I was not planning on....

Actually, I was not planning on anything yet, was hopeing you guys would be able to advise me. I was thinking of assembling the frames, then using a rabbiting bit on my router to create a 1/4 inch deep rabbit. Then lay in the plexi ( Caulk?) then make a trim (moulding or frame) to cover over the crack where the plexi meets the wood because they would both be flush. Does that make any sense?Billy

Those are very nice Dick. How did you seal the Plexiglas to keep water from getting into the slots? And how did you do the stars?

How To Keep The Water Out....

During assembly, a small bead of silicon is inserted into the slot (entire perimeter)that will house the glass. Being careful not to mix the the silicon with the waterproof glue on the mortise and tenons, I then assemble and clamp. After the glue cures any excess silicon (usually very minimal) is removed. Luckily I have never had a set of doors returned for leaks or, for that matter, anything else. As far as the logo, a local trophy shop burned that in with a laser. Nice, huh? Dick
