I have a 1981 Hunter 25. The companionway door is made of plywood and is decaying. I would like to replace it. Should I use Marine plywood with lots of varnish, teak (three pieces that can be fitted together and taken apart) or does Hunter make one ready made?

Creative Concepts

I bought companionway doors from Creative Concepts, a woodworking outfit on Orcus Island in the San Juans (Washington St.) Their advertisements are in the back of most sailing magazines and if memory serves me correctly, you can also get them off this web site. While expensive, they are beautifully made, have screens and the choice of dark or light glass (plastic) . I forgot his web site, but start here and you might liek what you see. It is my opinion that these doors will help sell the boat when I come to that decision point.

2d on doors. We have them on our 95 H26

and they are great. We get a good bit of rain and foul weather in the spring and with doors you can open and close them in a very few seconds. They keep the cabin dry and warm. They are also expensive. If you use plywood, and then stain and verithane, they should last a long time. The better you seal the end grain the longer they last. I would use standard exterior plywood if you do the above. Teak is very, very spendy. I'd do the doors before teak. This is only my cheap opinion as the doors came on my boat. Ray S/V Speedy

what do you want?

Mike: What do you want? Are you looking to replace the multiple section boards or are you wanting to replace a door? If you are looking for multiple piece boards, you can do a couple of things. You can have two or three sections of solid wood or you can put plastic in for one section and wood for the others. Or, you can have multiple pieces of plastic. My only complaint about plastic is the weight. Very heavy when you get a thick piece. If you want door, you are probably looking at $400-500. There is also Starboard/Kingboard (poly board) that is UV stabilized. These doors are NOT easy to make. There are some picture posts in the archives if you would like to take a look. I would suggest that you either use solid wood or trim the edges of plywood with solid wood so the water does not attack the plywood if you decide to go that way.
