You can buy a lot of very nice tools

and wood for 300 dollars. For you I would recommend a multi tool cordless set of drill, circular saw and jigsaw 18 volt and some nice cypress lumber that is readily available in the Tampa region.

Try the ebay approach

I recently replaced my drop boards on my hunter 25 with teak I found on ebay. After labor the total cost was $130 and it was done.

Don is this blatant commercialism

or an informative post? Companion way doors are wonderful but without attached plans really not much help. Teak is about six bucks a board foot and glue is about ten dollars a quart hinges and varnish might amount to another twenty-five so the rest is labor and entrepreneurial profit. Good for you. ;)

High Density Plastic

I went to a plastic distributor and used High Denisity Plastic cut the boards to size. Unlike other PVC and other plastics I've used to convert from wooden panels, the HDPE machines very easy on a table saw. With plastic, you don't have to worry about continuous maintenance. While I was at it, an additional hatch was made for cruising out of bronze transparent acrylic, the costs were $21.60 and $14.00, respectively. After seeing the fancy hatches and their prices at Strictly Sail last winter, I opted for the less expense solution.

Thanks to all responders

Called a local plastic fab company and they can make 3 of the 3 solid white, 2 semi clear and one with a vent cover for about $125. My skill set is very limited when it comes to woodwork... or metal... or sail... or fiberglass.... you get the point. Everyone was a big help and I'll post a pic of the results. BTW I love the doors......... I can buy a set for $370 but my wife is not a big fan of that much $$ being spent on my mistress. Thanks again!

Some years ago,

I planned to make a "winter companionway" board for the boat I had then. The idea was to cut a rectangle in the center to permit the installation of a stainless louvered vent. I used a piece of 3/8" mahoghany plywood, a simple jig saw, and some dark oak stain, and leftover varnish to finish it off. The end result was so good looking that this "winter" board became my every day board during the season. I doubt the whole thing cost more that $25 -- and it was fun and easy to make.
