Job? "We don' need no steenkeen job!"

...but about the pin boards...ever seen a Catalina 30 or 36? HUGE pinboards (width anyway) and haven't seen any warp from moisture. Got two buddies on TX gulf coast (Houston: C30, Corpus: C36) and neither have pin board problems, but you may still have a valid point. If one made pin boards out of lexsan, they wouldn't even have to varnish them every two or three years.

Now I'm completely lost....

...after following that thread. PJ's and doggie slippers and poodles..oh my! My H23 only has two hatchboards. The upper one has the hasp for the padlock and I guess the lower one is supposed to stay in when the goping gets rough to keep the water from splashing into the cabin. How the heck did you guys end up with five boards. Did Hunter change the design? Just curious. Peter S/V Raven

Peter,

Wife changed design. I don't know what was orginal but what we got was junk. Number of boards (3) was decided by what size teak boards were available at a reasonable price and not cutting up my old teak drafting table. Orginally had 2? What material? Greg H23 Faster- (size 9 Magilla Gorillia slippers)

Peter - Just keep everything in perspective.

Peter: Just keep everything in perspective. There are a couple of dufusses on this site. When the brain cells are reduced to a couple of grains of salt, who knows what is going to appear on these pages. Now on to business. Our Hunter 31 has 5 boards. The top two and the bottom two are wood and the middle one is plexiglass. This is the way they were delivered from the factory. Regarding your comment of when the going gets tough, you probably should have the entire companion way sealed. But if it is really that tough you should get your ass back into the slip. My uncle had an offshore experience several years ago while on his way to Ireland. They were hit by a rogue wave 9 days out from Cape Cod. Their Pin boards where teak louvers. The wave crashed through the pin boards (completely shattered them) and flooded the boat with 2-3 feet of water. Everybody survived except for their sails and electronics.

2nd Generation and still only 2 boards

Peter, I have an '87 H23 and it also only has 2 pinboards - same configuration as yours. The former owner replaced the original 2 boards with stock, off-the-shelf boards from West Marine. They fit great (except that he didn't align the padlock hasp quite to my liking - it's offset by about 1/4" - just enough to annoy me every time I close it up - but not enough to bother moving it.)

My two boards

My two hatchboards are varnished marine ply. They are a pretty snug fit in the slot, probably because of all that good Florida humidity. They have never leaked, even in driving rain. Some teak louvers would be nice for sitting at anchor in the evenings though. Peter
