Does anyone know where I can get some new companionway boards for a reasonable price? Also, I am having trouble locating a replacement bulb for my H23 bow light. You guys have such a wealth of knowledge and I am eternally grateful. Joe

Hi Joe, You can get the companionway boards (called 'pin boards') direct from the Hunter factory. Call the 800 number listed on this site, and try the retail parts extension (I think his name is Mike Thomas). They're about $60-$70, if I remember correctly, and you can get them finished or unfinished. As for the bow light, it's a fairly common part- You should be able to find it in any marine store. They're made by Aqua-Signal, series 25. At my local West Marine, the replacement bulbs for the nav lights are right next to the replacement fixtures. I think you need the 10-watt bulb (not the 5-watt) to meet the visibility requirements. Good luck! If you need any more info, let us know... --Jon Bastien H23 '2 Sheets to the Wind' H25 'Adagio'

other options

There are a couple of other options. First, make them from plastic. They are a little heavy but no more maintenance. They do tend to craze from the sun but you can live with that. The other option is to order the teak and make them. That would not be too difficult. The other option is to order them from H&L Marine is So. Cal. Their number is (323) 636-1718. Fair prices and good quality. They can supply the material and/or make them for you.

Mike B - Didn't fit?

...Really? Our new pin boards fit like a dream. They fit better than the boards they replaced, actually... --Jon Bastien H23 '2 Sheets to the Wind' H25 'Adagio'

Funny you should mention that Steve....

My boards are home made and teak. Cost about $40 in materials and fit like they were hand made for my boat. :) Greg H23 Faster-

Grrr greg.

Greg: That is very odd that your boards are home made and fit like they are "hand made".

I'll tell her Mike...

If she ever gets back from DC. Although, I think the exercise gave her all the experience with teak she wants. Pin boards arn't just boards. They're actually fairly precise and complicated if done correctly. She does want to replace all the hand rails though and she still thinks she can make a better sail cover than the one we got from West. Greg H23 Faster

Tell us the whole story, Greg

I'm sure you made some enhancement/modification to the pin boards to go along with your cable topping lift'in, modified reefing line'in, adjustable back stay'in, raised winch'in, genny track'in Stebbins (I mean Hunter) 23! (Besides the special foredeck cleats, did I miss anything?) ;-)

Stebbin 23 offers same room as the HC50

I have heard through the grape vine (not TX), that a Stebbins 23' has more room than a Hans Christian 50. Much easier to handle and sails by it self. How much truth is there here Greg?

Nah. pin boards are stright......

Joel, Yea, I’m afraid there’s a lot more. :) And Steve, though a 23 is just a 23, you'd be surprised how much room there is in a boat with out a diesel, fuel tanks, etc. Did you know that a Hunter could have "blocks" other than the ones supplied by Yarmar? And...I've heard that a Dion 31 doesn't have a mast (no phallic inference intended there Steve ) but does carry enough spare parts to assemble 2 more complete engines. Of course, the Dion-diesel repair shop takes up most of the cabin. AND lastly... Steve, Yarmar called. Your Yarmar Diesel-Dude pajamas are on back order. Nite all, Greg H23 Faster-

Diesel-Dude Pajamas?

"I have got to get me some of those"!!! Companion boards; what a nuisance. What I don't understand is why Hunter insists on having five boards when every other manufacturer on the planet has two or three. Yes, each of the five boards is smaller, making them easier to store, and lighter, making them easier to handle...BUT IT TAKES FOR FRIGGIN-EVER to get them in and out of the track. OK, I'm better now. To eliminate the problem forever, I have ordered companion doors. Actually, I have received the companion doors. Actually, I've been working on the companion boards for about 6 months now trying to get them to fit correctly and I still do not have them installed. I think I am going to have to break down and hire someone to finish the job. I'm pretty sure I am going to enjoy them if I ever get them on the boat. One more 2-pound box of sandpaper ought to do the trick.

Speaking of the grapevine (this time in TX)

The first sailing I ever did was about 20 years ago on Lake Grapevine just north west of Dallas on a friend's MacGregor 26. We'd trailer up, be in the water in under 30 minutes, sail for a few hours, dock up at this restaurant that had an "All-You-Can-Eat Catfish Buffet". Just thinking of those catfish and hush puppies is making me hungry....

Joel - Been tere do that....

I sailed the grape for years. Did you ever see a 40 ft skipjack, 10 foot bow sprite, rigged as a 3-Sail with Blue hull. That was us. Greg H23 Faster-

Doors? Just leave them open.

Jay: This is probably why hunter put in 5 slats. With the different cliimes that these boats are in, I can imagine that having two boards with all that moisture from the humidity and rain these things would warp pretty bad. Plus what would you have to complain about. I you would get a real job you would have time to get this done. Greg: You obviously do not know anything about my PJ attire, you did not mention my doggie slippers.

Apology accepted.

Greg: Think of it this way; "we did raise poodles......... with red hair". You gotta let them do their thing. Then they will just grow up and be fine upstanding adults like their mom & pop.
