Companion way

Hi all,
I had given some thought to the companion way hatch and how to secure it during the night while on board. My ideas were a wide range from simple to involved. I'm looking for security but I want to be able the open it quickly if the need arises. Does anyone have a DIY lock?

Ours has a simple hook and latch. seems to work fine for us. Are you looking for a means to put an actual lock on it, while inside ?

The PO of my boat used plastic shower curtain rod holders and a length of broom stick. You close the hatch and wedge the sick in the 2 holders. I keep the stick in my rolled up charts.

I'm thinking you need to change your crusing grounds if this is a concern.
I'd go for the broom stick with some velcro to hold it in place on the underside of the slider. Can't see the need for a lock from the inside unless the dog has some of those Pinky and the Brain type things going on.

A sliding barrel bolt- like you may have to lock the stove in a fixed position. Put it vertical on the companionway board to poke into the sliding hatch, or put one or two on the hatch itself to poke into the framework.

Just a simple barrel bolt mounted to the inside slider handle that engages a small hole in the slider support track works pretty well. You don't want to actually use a lock that requires a key or combination just in case something happens like a fire breaking out or the boat is hit and starts sinking and you need to get out in a hurry.

Break-ins are becoming more common near large USA cities than in 'de islands'.

We use something similar to the broom stick method on the Mac. Haven't considered it on the other boat yet. My concern has also been about someone ....

If you use the barrel bolt you probably do not want to drill a hole ALL the way through the slider as that would let water in.

both my boats have sliding barrel bolts--very simple and adaptable to any kind of entry. on my formosa, the brrel bolt is mounted on th e slider with the drilled receiving end in the companionway "jamb."

I was thinking vice-versa if we get traveling. I like those simple answers and could have a hole spaced back for a little air with the barrel bolt. I'd need to secure the lexan door slider so it couldn't be lifted. I was also thinking of a door chain on the hatch so it could be secure while letting air in. Thanks for all the ideas.

So I am sitting here thinking about being out in the ocean with large following seas. We drop in the pin boards, close the companion way to prevent getting pooped. We take a large swell on the beam and that barrel bolt goes right into that hole that is intended to keep those intruders out!

I guess this is just a vivid imagination.

Just came on and read down all the posts and thought when I get to the end of them I'd ask the same thing - but you stole my thunder.

Is there anyone who can provide a diagram or a picture so we understand everything? Maybe I'm not getting all the details.

Hrm....my boat lock is made by Glock. I don't think that I would like to shut the companionway when it is warm. I sleep lightly so I will know if someone comes aboard.

a few of us it seems are thinking the same thing about the barrel bolt..... but it is a great idea.... and a barrel bolt being made how it is, it would be so easy to drill a cross hole thru the end that is exposed when its open, so as to put a security clip in to prevent any accidental locking in the event of an upset....

You just need an alarm in the form of a nail studded "welcome" mat.
