Companion way roof underside separated

Hello,
More problems with my vega. I noticed some time ago that the
underside of the companion way roof (cabin roof?) has comeseparated
from the core, just at the side of the companion way. I was wondering
what the proper procedure is for fixing it.

I've been reading up on stuff from Don Caseys excellent book, and from it I gather I maybe should just cut the affected bit of the ceiling out, check that the core is ok and then epoxy the cutout back. Any other ideas?

I'll be going to the boat on sunday so I'll get a picture of it.

Hi,
Well, I'm not 100% I went to the boat today, and judging by knocking around the suspect area, the "separation" doesn't extend too far. So I guess I could just inject epoxy in the crack and then clamp it shut.

Mine has cracked open a bit too - but I've not got around to fixing it. I think it will be an "1) open the wound, 2) clean it up 3)clamp with some injected epoxy and maybe 3) support it with a bit of figerglass" project.

It hasn't moved for the past two years - since I bought the boat, but an open wound is not a good thing.

Hi,
That's a bit what I had in mind, too. Next weekend I'll use some
bits of wood to pry the crack a bit more open and then use some paper to check if the core is wet and to let it dry out for a while, before
sealing it up again.

Ofcourse it might be prudent to figure out what's caused it to crack in the first place. I wonder if it might be because of someone standing on companionway roof.

Hi Mikko,
given the downward forces exerted by the mast, the 100kg or less caused
by a person standing on coachroof shouldn't be a problem..

Hard not to stand on it when raising/lowering/reefing mainsail..

Maybe mast was dropped too quickly when being stepped and this damaged
coachroof?

You, that's true. Though this spot is a bit further away from the mast, and that bit is anyway supported by the bulkheads etc. whereas the bit where the crack is does not have much suppport around it, so it's perceivable that it might flex enough to cause the joint between the side of the roof to crack. Who knows.

Hi Mikko,
I was wondering if maybe your roof was separating at the companionway because of a coach top winch mounted mounted over the area. My roof has a hairline crack were the vertical portside companion way wall meets the coach roof. I have no portside coachtop winch, but I do have a starboard side winch (but not cracking on the starboard side).
I think the companionway wall is plywood and the coach top is divinylcell cored fiberglass, so it could be something to do with 2 dissimilar materials meeting. If my crack gets any larger, I will probably put in an epoxy filet in the area to strenghten it. -Tim
